Vad är skillnaden mellan en CPAP och en BiPAP?

En CPAP ger ifrån sig ett konstant tryck- och luftflöde både när du andas in och andas ut. Du kommer alltså att få ett visst motstånd när du andas ut men hjälp på traven när du andas in. Med en BiPAP kan du även ställa in så att motståndet vid utandning minskas ner så att det inte ligger på ett motstånd och det blir lättare att andas ut.

Formkudden till CPAP-Mask FORMA har gått sönder, är det vanligt?

Nej, det är inte vanligt att något går sönder på CPAP-masken. Om just formkudden har gått sönder så är det för att den har hanterats på fel sätt. Den har eventuellt sköljts i vatten och torkats i solen. Om man har haft en annan mask tidigare så drar man kanske åt pandbandet för hårt vilket inte behövs på FORMA då den är tät ändå.

Hur fungerar en CPAP?

CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) är den enklaste och mest effektiva behandling som finns för OSA. CPAP består av en väl anpassad mask som är anpassad runt näsan, munnen eller både näsan och munnen. Vad är OSA?

Under normal sömn är de flesta av våra muskler i ett avslappnat tillstånd, men en del av de muskler som styr luftvägarna är aktiva för att hålla luftvägarna öppna så att vi kan andas.

I vissa fall är luftvägarnas muskler avslappnade för mycket vilket gör att luftvägarna minskar något. Delvis avslappning leder ofta till snarkning. Snarkning är det buller som genereras av de mjuka / rörliga delarna av halsen när vibrerande luft passerar genom vid andning. Under snarkning har luftvägarna minskat något, men detta innebär inte att luftflödet minskar för mycket vid inandning.

På samma sätt slappnar musklerna av för mycket hos personer med OSA, men den luftvägsförträngning är större än i snarkning och orsakar en lätt eller full minskning av luftflödet till lungorna. En partiell luftvägskollaps i samband med en minskning av luftflödet kallas ”hypopnéindex”. En komplett luftvägskollaps i samband med fullständigt upphörande av luftflöde till lungorna kallas för en ”apné”.

När luftvägarna blockeras för OSA-personer så kommer man att vakna helt eller delvis för att aktivera andningen igen. Detta kan inträffa upp till flera hundra gånger per natt, vilket orsakar stora störningar i sin sömn och trötthet uppkommer under dagen. Ofta är man helt omedveten om dessa upprepade uppvaknanden och det är oftast partnern som iakttar detta när man kämpar efter andan i sömnen. Men vissa människor upplever en känsla av kvävning eller kippar efter andan. Obehandlad OSA kan leda till allvarliga hälsoproblem såsom högt blodtryck, hjärtinfarkt och stroke. Sömnighet under dagtid kan också leda till väg-eller arbetsplatsolyckor.

Termerna hypopnéindex och apné härrör från de grekiska orden ”HYPO”, vilket betyder lägre än normalt, ”A”, som betyder avsaknad av eller brist på, och ”PNEA”, som betyder att andas. Ordagrant ”under det normala andetag” och ”avsaknad av andetag ”.
